British Wild Flowers and Plants

British Wild Flower Plants began in 1986 with a list of some 78 species of native plants. Today we grow over 400 species, all from known native British origins and continually add to the numbers grown. New for 2000 are many grasses, sedges and rushes not often available elsewhere.

All plants are container grown using peat-free compost, in plugs and 9cm pots (full half-litre). Larger size containers - 1 and 2 litres are sometimes available from stock, but can always be grown to order. Plants are held in stock throughout the year, and we are happy to supply any numbers from one of a species to thousands. On the same day last year we sent out one Clematis by post, and delivered 24,000 9cm pot grown plants to a landscaper.

Provenance of wild plants has become increasingly important in recent years. We use only guaranteed native seed. In many cases we have collected the original seed ourselves and can be certain of its origin. Where local provenance is is needed, we can offer a seed collection service and contract growing of plants from the selected seed. This method also enables specifiers to have grown, species normally unobtainable commercially. The initial costs of seed collection can often be off-set against the lower cost of contract grown plants. Some forward planning is necessary - seed collected in summer will take approximately 6-9 months to produce plants ready for planting out the following spring, but you do get the plants you want, when you want them!

In addition to seed collection and contract growing, we also offer a consultancy service, site visits and botanical surveys throughout Britain. Recent projects include coastal reclamation schemes, roadside verge planting on major new road developments, marginal plants for new reservoirs and planting schemes for local authorities, schools and private gardeners wishing to enhance their garden's wildlife potential.
